Secondee FAQs

What is an industry secondment?

If you currently work within the rail industry, this is an employment arrangement where an employee receives an assignment outside of their company.

Through our industry secondment scheme, we can second people from the rail industry (with your organisation’s approval) into the Great British Railways Transition Team so we can benefit from their expertise in helping to create a simpler, better railway.

Industry secondees are still employed by their organisation but they will be seconded to the Great British Railways Transition Team.

Would my terms and conditions change?

Your terms and conditions remain the same as they are today by your employing organisation. If your salary is within the salary range for the role you have been offered, you will maintain your current salary and terms and conditions for the duration of the secondment.

How do I get paid?

You will still be paid in the same way you are today by your existing employer.

Do I need to have permission from my organisation to be released for industry secondment?

Yes, If you’re working within the rail industry and considering applying via a Secondment, we encourage you to have a conversation with your line manager early in the process to support a potential secondment into GBRTT and where successful, to support your release.

When will I start with GBRTT if I am successful?

A start date for your secondment would be negotiated with your organisation. Due to the time-sensitive nature of the secondments, we would hope for an early release (usually 4 weeks or so), therefore please discuss your application with your line manager as soon as possible.

Where would I be located if I joined on secondment?

The GBRTT office is located at Waterloo Station, London.  For most roles (unless specified through the advertisement and selection process) we encourage hybrid working and are flexible on the location on where you complete your work alongside any current homeworking arrangements you may have. However, occasional travel to London Waterloo will be required. This can be explored further during the interview process.

What developmental support will I get in my secondment?

The roles are exciting opportunities for personal and professional development for talented individuals with drive, ambition and a desire to stretch themselves.  You’ll be supported during this secondment with development tools and coaching, to ensure that you make the most of the talent development opportunity, help your future career and achieve business goals.

What happens at the end of the secondment?

At the end of the secondment, you will return to your organisation.  During your secondment, you should keep in touch with your home manager regarding the timescales for your return and any other updates from the organisation.

If my salary falls below the minimum of the salary range advertised, would I receive a secondment allowance?

If your salary is above the range advertised, please consider whether the secondment is matched to the level of skills and experience you have. Whilst no-one would be seconded to GBRTT on a lesser salary than they already hold with their employer, GBRTT may not be able to offer secondments to employees whose employment costs exceed well above the budget for the role (which is determined by estimated salary range and remuneration).

If my salary is above the maximum salary range advertised, should I apply as an industry secondee?

If your salary is above the range advertised, please consider whether the secondment is matched to the level of skills and experience you have. Whilst no-one would be seconded to GBRTT on lesser terms and conditions than they already hold with their Employer, GBRTT may not be able to offer secondments to employees who employment costs exceed well above the budget for the role (which is determined by estimated salary range and remuneration).
